Fragrance-free vs unscented: what the labels actually mean
Short answer: “unscented” means a product doesn't smell, which can mean a masking fragrance was added to cover other odors [1]. “Fragrance-free” usually means no fragrance was added, but neither term has a legal definition, so the ingredient list is the only reliable check. Dermatologists suggest choosing fragrance-free over unscented if your skin reacts easily [2].
Label terms decoded
| On the label | What it usually means | Can it contain fragrance? |
|---|---|---|
| Unscented | No noticeable smell | Yes. Masking fragrance can be added [1] |
| Fragrance-free | No fragrance ingredients added | It shouldn't, but check the list |
| “Fragrance” or “Parfum” in the ingredients | A blend that can contain many natural and synthetic chemicals, listed under one word [1] | Yes, by definition |
| Linalool, limonene, geraniol, citronellol… | Fragrance allergens; in the EU these must be named above set levels [3] | They're scent chemicals, natural or added |
| Lavender, rose, citrus peel oil… | Essential oils | They are fragrant and contain the same allergens |
Why it matters
Fragrance is the most common cause of allergic contact reactions to cosmetics [4]. In the US, companies can list a whole fragrance blend as simply “Fragrance” because fragrance formulas are treated as trade secrets [1], so you can't tell what's inside from the label.
Artificial fragrance vs essential oils: our rule
| Artificial fragrance / perfume | Essential oils | |
|---|---|---|
| Examples on labels | Fragrance, parfum, perfume, aroma; hexyl cinnamal, butylphenyl methylpropional | Lavandula angustifolia oil, citrus peel oil, rosa damascena flower oil |
| In Glow Kit picks | Never, for anyone | Allowed for most skin types |
| For sensitive skin or rosacea | Never | Excluded; they're still sensitizers |
One subtle case: if a label lists fragrance allergens like linalool or limonene but no essential oil that would explain them, we treat them as added perfume. Read more in how we choose products.

Is unscented the same as fragrance-free?
No. Unscented products can contain a masking fragrance that neutralizes other smells. Fragrance-free products shouldn't have added fragrance, but always check the ingredient list.
Are essential oils better than artificial fragrance?
They avoid undisclosed perfume blends, which is why we allow them for most people. But they contain the same allergens, so we exclude them for sensitive skin and rosacea.
Can a fragrance-free product still smell?
Yes. Ingredients have their own natural odor. Fragrance-free means nothing was added to change the scent.
