Methodology
How we choose products
In short: we read every product's full ingredient list, run it through written rules for pore-clogging ingredients, artificial fragrance, irritants and pregnancy, and only recommend products that pass for your answers. We don't accept payment from brands for placement. We do earn money from purchases, and we explain exactly how below.
The process
- Get the real ingredient list. From the brand's own site wherever possible (Face Reality, CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, Vanicream, PanOxyl, Differin, The Ordinary, EltaMD and others), with the source saved for each product. Products without a verifiable full list are excluded, not guessed.
- Screen it. Every list goes through the same automated rules (below), which you can run yourself in the ingredient checker.
- Match to skin type. Texture and actives are matched to skin type and concern, with one active at a time.
- Verify where you'd buy it. For Amazon, we check each product page for the exact product and size, sold by Amazon or the brand itself. Listings sold only by third-party sellers are dropped, since that's where counterfeits tend to turn up.
- Re-check. Formulas change. Each page shows the date lists were last checked, and we re-screen when brands reformulate.
The rules
| Rule | Who it applies to |
|---|---|
| No artificial fragrance or perfume (fragrance, parfum, aroma, synthetic aroma chemicals, or fragrance allergens with no essential-oil source) | Everyone |
| No essential oils, strong allergens (e.g. methylisothiazolinone, formaldehyde releasers, octocrylene, oxybenzone, arnica), irritants (menthol, camphor, witch hazel, SLS), strong acids, scrubs or retinoids | Sensitive skin and rosacea |
| Nothing from the Face Reality pore-clogging list anywhere; nothing from Acne.org's lists in the first 7 ingredients | Acne-prone skin |
| No drying alcohol (alcohol denat., ethanol, isopropyl) in the first 7 | Dry, sensitive and rosacea-prone skin |
| No retinoids or hydroquinone; ‘ask your OB’ note on salicylic acid, tranexamic acid and arbutin | Pregnant, breastfeeding or trying (and ‘prefer not to say’) |
| Broad-spectrum SPF 30+, mineral first | Every morning routine |
| Deep, painful or scarring acne, or signs of infection: no actives, see a professional | Everyone |
Where the rules come from
- Pore-clogging lists: Face Reality and Acne.org, read in light of the limits of comedogenicity testing (Draelos & DiNardo, 2006). See what ratings can and can't tell you.
- Fragrance and allergens: the clinical fragrance-allergy literature (de Groot & Frosch, 1997), the EU's labeled fragrance allergens, and American Contact Dermatitis Society “Allergen of the Year” data.
- Actives: the AAD's 2024 acne guideline, FDA Drug Facts labels, and ACOG guidance for pregnancy.
How we make money (and how we handle the conflict)
Glow Kit Drop shares owners with Unblur Shop, which sells the Face Reality products shown as Recommended Picks, so we benefit when you buy them. Amazon links are affiliate links: as an Amazon Associate, Glow Kit Drop earns from qualifying purchases. To keep that honest:
- Unblur products go through the same screen as everything else. Some fail, and we say so: Colorescience No-Show SPF 50 (sold by Unblur) fails our acne screen, and HydraBalance Gel is excluded for sensitive skin because of its essential oils.
- Every core step has an Amazon alternative that passes the same screen, so you can choose on price.
- We don't show Amazon prices, ratings or star counts, and we never publish reviews or testimonials we can't verify.
- Disclosures appear at the top of every page and next to product links. Full disclosure.
Right now our screened catalog includes 16 Unblur Shop products and 20 Amazon alternatives.
Limits, stated plainly
- An ingredient screen can't prove a product won't break you out or irritate you. It removes known risks.
- Brands reformulate. Always check the label you're holding.
- Some Unblur Shop pages don't print a full ingredient list, so we match them to Face Reality's published list by name and actives.
- We're an editorial team, not dermatologists, and nothing here is medical advice. For severe, painful or scarring acne, a rash, or anything that worries you, see a board-certified dermatologist.
