Acne-prone skin
How to use adapalene (Differin Gel) without wrecking your skin barrier
Short answer: at night, after cleansing, apply a pea-sized amount of adapalene 0.1% as a thin layer over the whole acne-prone area, then moisturize. Start every other night. Expect dryness, and possibly a temporary flare, in the first weeks; results can take up to 3 months [1]. Don't use it if you're pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive.
Why adapalene
Adapalene is a topical retinoid. It's been available over the counter at 0.1% in the US since 2016, and the AAD's 2024 guideline strongly recommends topical retinoids for acne [2]. It helps unclog pores and calm inflammation, so it suits blackheads and whiteheads, and mixed acne.
Step by step
- Cleanse gently and pat dry.
- Take a pea-sized amount for the whole face. Dot it on forehead, cheeks and chin, then spread a thin layer, avoiding eyes, lips and the corners of the nose [3].
- Apply moisturizer on top; it reduces irritation [3].
- Use it every other night for the first 2 weeks, then nightly if your skin is comfortable.
- Every morning: broad-spectrum SPF 30+.
What the first 12 weeks look like
| Weeks | What to expect |
|---|---|
| 1–4 | Redness, dryness, flaking or mild burning are most likely now and usually ease with continued use [1]. |
| 2–6 | Acne may look worse before it improves. The label calls this normal [1]. Some pimples that were forming under the skin come to the surface [4]. |
| 8–12 | Full benefit can take 8–12 weeks of daily use [4]. |
If irritation is more than mild, drop back to every third night or use more moisturizer, and stop if you get severe burning, swelling or blistering.
What to pair it with, and what not to
| Combination | OK? |
|---|---|
| Gentle cleanser + moisturizer + sunscreen | Yes, this is the ideal base |
| Benzoyl peroxide in the morning | Yes. Adapalene is stable with BPO [5] |
| Salicylic or glycolic acid the same night | Not while you're adjusting; alternate nights later if needed |
| Scrubs, cleansing brushes, waxing on treated skin | Avoid |
| Another retinoid (retinol, retinal) | No, pick one |
Who should not use adapalene
Don't use adapalene if you're pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive; ask your OB about alternatives such as azelaic acid [6]. Skip it on eczema, sunburned, broken or very sensitive skin, and check with a dermatologist if you have rosacea.

How long does Differin take to work?
Improvement often starts around 4–6 weeks, and the label says it may take up to 3 months of once-daily use to see full results.
Is the Differin purge normal?
The label says acne may appear to worsen during the early weeks, and that this is normal. It should improve with continued use. Severe irritation is a reason to stop.
Can I use adapalene every night?
Most people work up to nightly use after a week or two of every-other-night use. If your skin stays irritated, keep it to every other night.
Can I use adapalene while pregnant?
No. Topical retinoids, including adapalene, aren't recommended in pregnancy. Ask your OB about options such as azelaic acid.
