What order to apply skincare, morning and night
Short answer: cleanse → treatment (if you use one) → moisturizer → sunscreen (morning only). Makeup goes on last. A good rule of thumb is thinnest to thickest. When a product's own label says something different, follow the label [1].
The order, step by step
| Step | Morning | Night | Why here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cleanser | Cleanser | Clean skin first, so later products go on evenly |
| 2 | Treatment or serum (e.g. azelaic acid, niacinamide) | Treatment (e.g. adapalene, retinol, an exfoliating acid) | Medicated products go on right after cleansing [1] |
| 3 | Moisturizer | Moisturizer | Seals in water and can reduce irritation from treatments |
| 4 | Sunscreen, SPF 30+ | None | Last, so nothing dilutes or disturbs the film |
| 5 | Makeup (optional) | None | Over sunscreen, never under it |
Where specific products go
| Product | When | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Benzoyl peroxide wash | AM or PM, as your cleanser | Massage in for 1–2 minutes, then rinse. It bleaches fabric, so use white towels. |
| Adapalene (Differin) or retinol | PM only | Pea-sized amount over the whole area, then moisturizer. Not in pregnancy. See how to start adapalene. |
| Salicylic acid (BHA) or AHA leave-on | PM, on nights you don't use a retinoid | Start a few nights a week |
| Azelaic acid | AM and/or PM | After cleansing, before moisturizer. Mild tingling is common at first. |
| Niacinamide serum | AM or PM | Before moisturizer |
| Spot treatment | PM | On individual spots, after moisturizer has absorbed (or as the label directs) |
| Hydrocolloid patch | Any time | On clean, dry skin; nothing underneath |
Layering rules that prevent irritation
- One new active at a time. Introduce it, wait 2–4 weeks, then decide whether to add another.
- Don't stack exfoliants. A retinoid and an exfoliating acid on the same night is a common cause of irritation; alternate nights instead.
- Don't apply benzoyl peroxide at the same time as prescription tretinoin. BPO can break down tretinoin; adapalene is stable with BPO [2]. If you use both, use BPO in the morning and the retinoid at night.
- Fewer products is better. The AAD warns that using too many products, especially several anti-aging products, may irritate the skin [1].

Does moisturizer go before or after sunscreen?
Moisturizer goes first, sunscreen last. The AAD says sunscreen goes on after your other skincare and before makeup.
Do serums go before moisturizer?
Yes. Thinner, water-based treatments go on clean skin, then moisturizer on top.
Should I wait between skincare steps?
For most products a minute or two is enough for each layer to settle. Follow any waiting time on a product's label.
Can I use a retinoid in the morning?
Retinoids such as adapalene are used at night. Use sunscreen every morning, since retinoids can make skin more sensitive to the sun.
